SDXNS200H Combustion Ion Chromatography System (CIC)

The SDXNS200H Combustion Ion Chromatography System (CIC) is an integrated analytical platform for the qualitative and quantitative determination of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and sulfur in solid and liquid samples. It combines programmable high-temperature pyrolysis, steam-assisted conversion, absorption and collection, automatic volume adjustment and dilution, and ion chromatographic separation in a fully coordinated workflow.

Designed for samples including coal, biomass, petrochemicals, paper products, degradable materials, electronic and electrical products, soil, ores and cement, the system provides a measuring range of 5 ppm to 1% in the standard configuration and 0.2 ppm to 1% in the ultra-low-level configuration. Automated sample handling, flexible combustion atmospheres, simultaneous multi-element analysis and integrated data management make the SDXNS200H suitable for laboratories requiring efficient, sensitive and reliable halogen and sulfur analysis.

PFAS Application

SDXNS200H can be used as a rapid, non-targeted fluorine screening tool for materials suspected of containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Its software includes configurable pyrolysis and steam-introduction parameters for perfluorinated compounds, enabling method optimization for different sample matrices. By determining the overall fluorine content released during combustion, the SDXNS200H helps laboratories screen samples, identify potentially fluorine-rich materials and prioritize samples for further compound-specific analysis.

FAQs
The system is designed for the qualitative and quantitative determination of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and sulfur.
The SDXNS200H combines high-temperature pyrolysis with ion chromatography. The sample is progressively introduced into the heated furnace, where the target elements are converted into hydrogen halides and sulfur-containing gases. These products are absorbed into a collection solution and subsequently separated and quantified by ion chromatography.
Applicable samples include biomass, coal, petrochemicals, paper products, degradable materials, electronic and electrical products, soil, ores and cement. Both solid and liquid samples can be introduced.

The specified measuring ranges are:

  • Standard version: 5 ppm to 1%
  • Ultra-low-level version: 0.2 ppm to 1%

The practical range may also depend on sample mass, collection volume, dilution factor and the selected calibration range.

The general technical specification is ≤0.1 g. The operating procedure recommends approximately 0.05 ± 0.001 g for a typical air-dried solid sample.
The pyrolysis temperature is adjustable up to 1250°C, with a specified temperature-control accuracy of ±5°C. The furnace is designed for long-term operation at approximately 1200°C.
The manual identifies F, Cl, Br, I and S as measurable elements. However, the simultaneous-analysis capability is specifically stated for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and sulfur. The manual does not explicitly state that iodine is included in the same four-component simultaneous method.
The adjustable pyrolysis time is no more than 15 minutes. Under continuous testing conditions, the stated average test time is also no more than 15 minutes per sample.
The instrument supports selectable gas conditions involving argon, oxygen and steam-assisted mixed-gas operation. The atmosphere and flow parameters can be configured according to the sample type and analytical method.
Yes. Liquid samples can be introduced using the liquid autosampler or placed in a crucible. When using a crucible, the manual recommends adding quartz wool and dispensing the liquid onto the quartz wool to reduce direct contact with and corrosion of the crucible.
Ion chromatography separates the ions before quantification. This reduces mutual interference among components in the collection solution and generally provides lower detection limits, higher sensitivity, better repeatability and more reliable multi-component analysis.
  • Oxygen: ≥99.95%
  • Argon: ≥99.999%

For ultra-low-level analysis, gas purification traps should be installed to reduce blank contamination.

The pre-start procedure specifies approximately:

  • Oxygen: 400 mL/min
  • Carrier argon: 200 mL/min
  • Steam-assisted argon: 100 mL/min

These values should normally be established during installation and should not be changed arbitrarily.

The recommended ambient temperature is 20 ± 10°C, with a temperature variation of no more than 3°C during one day of testing and relative humidity no higher than 85%.

For measurements below 1 ppm, the room temperature should preferably remain below 22°C, with a variation of no more than 2°C. The laboratory should also be clean, ventilated and free from corrosive gases, dust, vibration, strong electromagnetic fields and significant air currents.

The installation requirements specify ultrapure water with:

  • Resistivity: ≥18 MΩ·cm
  • TOC: ≤50 μg/L
  • Chloride: ≤1 μg/L
  • Total silicon: ≤3 μg/L

Water quality is particularly important for low-level fluorine and chlorine measurements.

After startup, the software evaluates baseline noise and drift against preset limits. Baseline stabilization generally requires more than one hour. Calibration or sample analysis should begin only after both noise and drift meet the specified acceptance criteria.

The Blank Sample Experiment option must first be enabled in the experimental settings. A blank run is then created without adding a sample. The operator selects an acceptable blank result, and the corresponding peak areas are subtracted from subsequent sample results.

For trace-level testing, the combustion tube, sample box, crucible, collection system, water and gases must all be controlled carefully because they may contribute to the system blank.

The system supports several calibration approaches:

  1. Automatic standard-solution preparation when the automatic dilution function is installed.
  2. Direct solution analysis using individually prepared standards.
  3. Calibration through the normal sample-testing route, using an autosampler or standards introduced into crucibles.

After the standard chromatograms are acquired, component names and concentrations are assigned, the calibration points are imported, and the software fits either all component curves or an individual component curve.

The workstation provides:

  • Instrument preparation and automatic testing
  • Furnace, gas-flow and IC control
  • Standard-curve generation and backup
  • Chromatogram acquisition and peak processing
  • Blank correction and result recalculation
  • Relative standard deviation calculation
  • Historical-data searching
  • Excel export and report printing
  • User, role and permission management
  • Parameter and database backup
  • Fault, communication and operation logs
  • Consumable replacement reminders
  • LIMS connectivity

The operator should check:

  • Gas tightness of the combustion and collection system
  • Oxygen and argon supply and flow rates
  • Selection of the correct pyrolysis method
  • Condition of the combustion tube and collection bottle
  • Cleanliness of the flow path
  • IC pump pressure and flow stability
  • Chromatographic column condition
  • Suppressor operation
  • Conductivity-cell condition
  • Baseline noise and drift
  • Sample homogeneity, mass and dilution settings

Leaks, insufficient gas flow, an unsuitable method, contaminated water or reagents, air bubbles in the IC flow path and column deterioration are common causes of unstable results.
