SDVD1000 Quick Dryer

The SDVD1000 Quick Dryer is designed for rapid moisture removal from small sample batches before grinding and preparation. It is suitable for coal, power generation, metallurgy, chemical processing, and solid or hazardous waste applications. The instrument can also be used to accelerate sample cooling and equilibration with ambient air.

Unlike a conventional drying oven, the SDVD1000 creates negative pressure beneath the sample tray, drawing temperature-controlled air vertically through the entire sample layer. This through-flow drying principle significantly increases air–sample contact and accelerates the removal of surface moisture. At 40°C, typical drying times are approximately 6–20 minutes for 30–500 g samples, providing drying efficiency approximately 5–11 times higher than a conventional oven under the stated test conditions.

The system incorporates three independently controlled drying chambers, adjustable drying and cooling programs, PID temperature control, touchscreen operation, door-status monitoring, and automatic fault diagnostics. Optional PC software, an electronic balance, and a barcode scanner can be integrated to support sample identification, weight-loss recording, process monitoring, and laboratory data management.

Key Features

High-Efficiency Through-Flow Drying

The SDVD1000 uses a three-dimensional through-flow drying method, in which heated air passes directly through the sample layer. Compared with conventional oven drying before grinding, this design significantly improves drying efficiency and reduces operating costs.

At 40°C, drying efficiency is approximately 5–11 times higher than that of a conventional oven, depending on the sample quantity:

  • 30–100 g: approximately 6–8 minutes
  • 100–400 g: approximately 6–15 minutes
  • 400–500 g: approximately 10–20 minutes

Intelligent and Traceable Drying Process

When connected to a computer, key operating information from each drying unit—including drying temperature, drying time, door status, interrupted operation, and abnormal termination—can be recorded and displayed in real time.

The system can also be connected to a barcode scanner and balance for automatic sample identification and accurate recording of sample weight changes before and after drying. One computer can simultaneously manage up to two SDVD1000 units.

Adjustable Low-Temperature Drying

The drying temperature can be set between ambient temperature and 60°C according to different sample preparation requirements. Users can freely configure both the drying temperature and drying time, helping maintain sample integrity and representativeness.

Three Independently Controlled Drying Units

The SDVD1000 is equipped with three independently controlled drying units. Each unit can be operated separately or in any required combination, allowing different samples or drying programs to be processed without interfering with one another.

Ultrasonic Cleaning for Consistent Airflow

An ultrasonic cleaner is included as standard to effectively remove material blocking the sample-tray screen. Regular cleaning helps maintain smooth airflow and stable drying efficiency during long-term operation.

FAQs

A centrifugal blower creates negative pressure beneath the drying chamber, drawing air into the chamber from above. The incoming air is heated to the preset temperature and passes vertically through the sample layer, increasing air exchange and rapidly removing external moisture from the sample.

The SDVD1000 is primarily intended for rapid pre-drying of samples before grinding in coal, power generation, metallurgy, and chemical-industry laboratories. Proper pre-drying helps prevent the ground sample from caking and improves its subsequent screening performance. The instrument can also be used for accelerated air equilibration of samples.

Its primary function is sample pre-drying and moisture removal before sample preparation rather than direct analytical determination of moisture content. When equipped with the optional balance and PC software, the system can record sample weights before and after drying and calculate the corresponding moisture loss.

Each drying chamber can process approximately 30–500 g of sample per cycle. The instrument has three drying chambers, and each chamber can process up to 500 g independently.

The instrument contains three independently controlled drying chambers. Therefore, up to three sample batches can be processed at the same time, provided that each batch is placed in a separate chamber.

The general temperature-control range is from ambient temperature to 60°C, with a default setting of 40°C. The maximum temperature rise is approximately 35°C above ambient, so the instrument may not reach 60°C when operated in a very low-temperature environment.

Each chamber is equipped with a PTC heater and a PT100 temperature sensor. The controller compares the measured temperature with the preset value and uses a PID algorithm to adjust heater output. The specified temperature-control accuracy is ±2.5°C, with a resolution of 1°C.

Under the stated test conditions at 40°C, the manual gives the following approximate drying times:

  • 30–100 g: 6–8 minutes
  • 100–400 g: 6–15 minutes
  • 400–500 g: 10–20 minutes

Actual drying time depends on sample mass, particle-size distribution, initial moisture content, sample type, and bed thickness.

The operating procedure recommends starting at approximately 40°C. Suggested initial drying times are about 5 minutes for samples up to 100 g, 10 minutes for 100–200 g, and 15 minutes for samples above 200 g. The drying time should be extended for unusual coal types or samples with high moisture content.

The sample should be spread naturally and as evenly as possible across the screen surface. It must not be manually compressed, tamped, or compacted, because excessive bed density increases airflow resistance and may cause slow or uneven drying.

The sealed chamber forces the heated air to pass through the sample instead of bypassing it. A flow-distribution plate moderates and distributes the airflow, while the tray seals tightly against its holder. This arrangement reduces local airflow differences and improves drying uniformity.

The stainless-steel sample tray uses a woven metal screen with an approximately 0.02 mm aperture. The screen allows heated air to pass through the sample while helping prevent sample particles from being drawn into the airflow system.

Yes. Drying temperature, drying time, and cooling time can be set independently for each chamber. The chambers may be operated individually or in any required combination without interfering with one another.

The drying temperature can be set from 25°C to 60°C. Drying time and cooling time can each be set from 0 to 1,440 minutes. Saved parameter changes take effect during the next operating cycle.

In cooling mode, the blower operates without heating. This accelerates sample cooling toward ambient temperature and helps the sample approach moisture equilibrium with the surrounding air after drying.

Yes. Each chamber provides an offset correction and a coefficient correction based on:

y = kx + b

where x is the PT100 reading, k is the correction coefficient, b is the temperature offset, and y is the corrected displayed temperature. The offset range is ±5°C, and the coefficient range is 800–1,200‰.

When door monitoring is enabled, opening the door during operation stops the corresponding chamber and generates a “door not closed” warning. After the door is correctly closed, the chamber can continue operating. Door monitoring can also be disabled through the function settings.

The instrument monitors conditions including PT100 short circuit, PT100 open circuit, overtemperature, abnormal heating, and an open chamber door. An overtemperature warning is triggered above 70°C. A heating abnormality is identified when the temperature changes by no more than approximately 1.5°C within three minutes.

The optional PC system can be used for user management, parameter configuration, log review, and data management. With a compatible balance, it can record sample weights before and after drying and calculate moisture loss. Compatible balance brands include Xiangping, Mettler Toledo, and Sartorius.

Check whether the sample-tray screen is blocked, the ventilation hoses are loose, damaged, folded, or leaking, the chamber door and sealing strips are properly closed, and the centrifugal blower is operating normally. The tray should be cleaned after use and washed when airflow becomes restricted or after approximately 40 operating cycles. If drying remains uneven, reduce the sample quantity, extend the drying time, and verify that the sample is evenly distributed across the tray.
