SDTGA6000A Thermogravimetric Analyzer

The SDTGA6000A Thermogravimetric Analyzer is an automatic macro thermogravimetric system designed for the determination of moisture and ash in coal, coke, solid biomass fuels, solid waste and hazardous waste. It can also be used for the analysis of carbon content in fly ash and bottom ash, loss on ignition in cement, and moisture and ash in calcined petroleum coke.

The analyzer integrates high-temperature heating, automatic sample positioning and high-precision weighing into a single system. Up to 19 samples plus one blank can be processed in one batch. Multiple test modes are available, including standard moisture, custom moisture, slow ashing, rapid ashing, custom ash and combined moisture-and-ash analysis, allowing laboratories to configure methods for different sample types and testing requirements.

With automatic lid opening, real-time balance display and configurable test procedures, the SDTGA6000A reduces manual handling and improves laboratory efficiency while maintaining stable temperature control and weighing accuracy. It is suitable for routine quality control and laboratory analysis in the coal, power generation, cement, metallurgy, petrochemical, environmental and research sectors.

Key Features

High-Throughput Batch Analysis

The single-furnace system accommodates up to 19 samples and one blank per batch, enabling laboratories to process multiple samples efficiently with less operator intervention.

Flexible Moisture and Ash Test Methods

The analyzer supports:

  • Standard moisture determination
  • Custom moisture methods
  • Slow ashing
  • Rapid ashing
  • Custom ash methods
  • Individual moisture or ash tests
  • Combined moisture-and-ash analysis

Custom methods allow users to define test temperatures, holding times, heating rates and gas conditions for different materials and laboratory procedures.

Automatic Weighing and Calculation

FAQs

The standard SDTGA6000A configuration is designed primarily for automatic determination of moisture and ash. It can also be applied to carbon-in-ash analysis and loss-on-ignition testing by selecting an appropriate test procedure. An optional configuration supports moisture, ash and volatile matter analysis from one sample weighing, although the resulting volatile matter value is not intended for arbitration testing.

The analyzer is applicable to coal, coke, solid biomass fuels, solid waste, hazardous waste, fly ash, bottom ash, cement and calcined petroleum coke. The selected test method, sample mass, heating program and gas atmosphere must be appropriate for the specific material.

The analyzer uses macro thermogravimetric analysis. Samples are heated under controlled temperature and atmospheric conditions, while an integrated analytical balance records mass changes before, during or after each test stage. Moisture and ash are calculated from the corresponding mass losses and residual mass.

The SDTGA6000A accommodates up to 19 samples plus one blank, giving a total of 20 positions. The blank position can be used according to the selected software settings and laboratory procedure.

Yes. The analyzer supports combined moisture-and-ash testing. After moisture determination and weighing, the system automatically proceeds to the programmed ash stage and calculates the corresponding results, reducing repeated sample preparation and manual handling.

The software provides air-drying, nitrogen-drying and user-defined moisture methods. In a custom method, the operator can configure the test temperature, test duration, acceptable sample-weight range, constant-mass determination and gas atmosphere.

Nitrogen drying is used when the selected method requires an inert atmosphere, particularly for samples that may oxidize during conventional drying. The manual specifies that nitrogen must be supplied when the nitrogen-drying method is selected.

The analyzer supports slow ashing, rapid ashing, ASTM ash procedures and user-defined ash methods. A custom ash program may include multiple temperature stages, holding times, heating rates and gas conditions.

Slow ashing uses a controlled, gradual heating procedure and is suitable for a wider range of coal samples. Rapid ashing shortens the analysis cycle but may not be suitable for every coal type. When rapid ashing produces abnormally high or low results, the manual recommends confirming the gas supply and considering the slow-ashing method.

Yes. Users can establish multiple temperature-control points and define the target temperature, holding time, heating rate and gas atmosphere for each stage. Custom programs should be validated before routine use because changes to these parameters may directly affect test results.

Depending on the method, the system may require air, nitrogen or oxygen. Nitrogen is used for nitrogen-drying and ASTM volatile matter procedures, while oxygen or air may be used for ash determination. Gas cylinders and pressure regulators are supplied or prepared according to the installation configuration.

After the gas line and pressure regulator have been properly installed, the manual specifies adjusting the regulator to approximately 0.1 MPa for nitrogen or oxygen supply. The gas system must be fitted with standard pressure gauges.

  • Nitrogen drying for moisture: approximately 3–6 L/min
  • Conventional ash testing with air: approximately 10–12 L/min
  • Ash testing with oxygen: approximately 6–9 L/min
  • ASTM volatile matter, depending on the selected method: approximately 4–8 L/min or 15–20 L/min
  • ASTM ash testing: approximately 15–20 L/min with air or 3–6 L/min with oxygen

The applicable method settings should take priority over a general flow value.

The technical range is 0.5–10 g, and the allowable range can be configured in the software. The actual sample mass depends on the sample type and test method. For conventional volatile matter analysis described in the shared manual, coal samples are generally limited to 0.9–1.1 g, while coke samples are generally limited to 0.5–0.6 g.

The instrument and analytical balance should be powered on for at least 30 minutes before testing. This allows the weighing and temperature-control systems to stabilize. For moisture determination, the initial internal temperature should not exceed 40°C.

The integrated analytical balance has a readability of 0.0001 g. Calibration is required after the balance or instrument has been moved, after seasonal environmental changes, or at the recommended six-month interval. A 100 g calibration weight is specified in the manual for the described calibration procedure.

The recommended operating environment is:

  • Temperature: 5–35°C
  • Relative humidity: not more than 85%
  • Clean laboratory without smoke or excessive dust
  • No strong airflow, vibration, corrosive gas or electromagnetic interference

Air-conditioning outlets and fans must not blow directly toward the analyzer, as airflow can affect weighing stability.

Crucibles must be clean, fully ignited and free from cracks or damage. Crucibles stored for more than five days should be re-ignited before use. For volatile matter testing, each crucible and lid must have a good fit without visible gaps and should preferably remain as a matched pair. Results must be rejected when a crucible or lid is found cracked after testing.

Yes. When a test is interrupted abnormally, the instrument and software can be restarted and the corresponding Recover Moisture/Ash Test or Recover Volatile Matter Test function selected. Starting a new weighing procedure instead of recovering the interrupted test may make the previous test unrecoverable.

We recommend using three to five certified coal reference materials. Each material should be tested in two groups, with two replicate determinations per group, to evaluate repeatability, reproducibility and accuracy. If the results remain outside the applicable limits after confirmation testing, the instrument should be inspected, adjusted or serviced before routine analysis continues.
