FAQs

The SDLOI2000 is primarily designed for loss on ignition determination in alumina and other inorganic materials. The software includes a predefined Alumina sample type and two user-definable sample categories. It can therefore be configured for materials such as aluminum fluoride, cryolite, iron ore, lateritic nickel ore, cement, limestone, dolomite, combustion residues and other samples requiring gravimetric determination after high-temperature treatment. The exact test conditions should be configured according to the applicable analytical method.

The instrument uses a single-furnace, rotary sample-tray configuration and can accommodate up to 20 crucibles per batch. The number of samples can be entered in the weighing interface, and the system automatically terminates the weighing sequence when the specified number has been reached.

After the crucibles and samples have been weighed, the instrument automatically starts the programmed heating cycle. At the end of each required heating stage, the integrated analytical balance weighs the crucibles, and the software calculates the corresponding moisture or loss on ignition result. Depending on the configured method, additional heating and weighing cycles may be performed until the constant-weight criteria are satisfied.

Yes. The software provides separate configurable stages for moisture determination and loss on ignition determination. Either stage can be enabled or disabled, allowing the instrument to perform moisture only, LOI only, or both stages consecutively in one automated method.

For moisture testing, the manual specifies that the initial internal furnace temperature should not exceed 40°C before the test begins.

The operator can configure the target temperature, heating time, holding time and constant-weight conditions independently for the moisture and LOI stages.

According to the manual:

  • Moisture-stage temperature: 50–1150°C
  • Moisture-stage holding time: 1–400 minutes
  • Moisture-stage ramp time: 7–360 minutes
  • LOI-stage temperature: 110–1150°C
  • LOI-stage holding time: 1–400 minutes
  • LOI-stage ramp time: 10–360 minutes

The default settings shown in the manual are 110°C for the moisture stage and 1000°C for the LOI stage, but these values should be adjusted only in accordance with the applicable test method.

The software allows the sample-weight limits to be configured for different methods. The configurable lower sample-weight limit is within 0.1–40 g, while the configurable upper limit is within 0.2–40 g.

For the alumina operating procedure described in the manual, the recommended sample mass is 4.5–5.5 g. Other materials may require different sample masses based on their test method, expected mass loss and crucible capacity.

Yes. The software allows the acceptable crucible-weight range to be defined before weighing:

  • Configurable minimum crucible weight: 1–60 g
  • Configurable maximum crucible weight: 1–100 g
  • Default range stated in the manual: 15–35 g

This function prevents unsuitable crucibles or incorrect weighing positions from being accepted during automated sample preparation.

Two weighing modes are provided:

Individual weighing — crucible first: Each crucible is weighed, the sample is added, and the loaded crucible is weighed before proceeding to the next position.

Batch crucible weighing with individual sample addition: All empty crucibles are weighed first. The operator then adds samples one by one, and the system records each loaded weight.

The second mode is generally more efficient when preparing a full batch of similar samples.

The integrated balance has a readability of 0.0001 g. The manual identifies a Mettler Toledo balance with a weighing range of 0–220 g as the standard configuration and also describes a Sartorius alternative with a range of 0–124 g.

The balance should be warmed up for at least 30 minutes before testing. It must be recalibrated after being moved and should also be checked when seasons change or at approximately six-month intervals.

Constant-weight control can be enabled independently for the moisture and LOI stages. The software evaluates successive mass measurements against configurable conditions, including:

  • Duration of each additional constant-weight heating cycle
  • Permissible mass-change value
  • Initial moisture or LOI threshold used to trigger constant-weight testing
  • Treatment of a measured mass increase

The additional heating time can be set from 5 to 30 minutes, with a default value of 20 minutes. The default mass-change value stated in the manual is 0.001 g. This function allows the endpoint to be determined from actual mass behavior rather than relying only on a fixed heating time.

Yes. The method settings provide three atmosphere options:

  • No gas flow
  • Nitrogen
  • Oxygen

The atmosphere should be selected according to the analytical method and the chemical behavior of the sample. The manual also notes that the instrument incorporates a supporting-rod mechanism that allows testing to continue without a compressed-gas source when the selected method does not require controlled gas introduction.

Yes. When in-process weighing is enabled, the instrument records sample mass and furnace temperature during the test. The weighing interval can be configured from 1 to 20 minutes, with a default interval of 5 minutes.

The stored mass and temperature curves can be displayed in the data-management software, providing additional information on the sample’s thermal mass-change behavior.

Yes. The software can control an external fume hood connected to the analyzer. During sample loading, the fume hood can be opened automatically to remove odors or fumes.

Before weighing, the system can close the fume hood and wait for a configurable delay period so that airflow does not affect balance stability. The manual specifies a configurable weighing delay of 10–5000 seconds, with a default value of 30 seconds.

The furnace lid can open automatically after completion of the test and once the furnace reaches the configured opening temperature. The automatic opening temperature can be set from 0 to 1000°C, with a default value of 500°C.

Opening the lid and activating the cooling system accelerates heat dissipation, reducing the waiting time before the next batch. The lid-opening temperature should nevertheless be selected with consideration for laboratory safety, crucible handling and the sample method.

The specified operating environment is:

  • Ambient temperature: 5–35°C
  • Relative humidity: ≤85%
  • Clean laboratory environment without smoke or excessive dust
  • No strong airflow, vibration, electromagnetic interference or corrosive gases

Air-conditioning outlets and fans must not blow directly toward the instrument because airflow can affect analytical-balance stability and weighing accuracy.

The heating section requires AC 220 V ±10%, 50 Hz ±1 Hz. Although the analytical power is stated as below 4 kW, the manual specifies an instantaneous maximum heating load of approximately 4.5 kW. The site should therefore provide a power circuit rated above 4.5 kW.

The furnace heating supply and the power supply for the control system, computer and other terminal equipment should be connected to separate phases. Reliable protective grounding is mandatory.

Crucibles must be clean, pre-ignited and brought to constant mass before use. The manual recommends storing prepared crucibles in a drying tower without desiccant. Crucibles stored for more than five days should be re-ignited before use.

Samples should be thoroughly homogenized before weighing. The sample scoop should be cleaned whenever a different sample container or material is introduced to prevent cross-contamination.

Yes. During sample weighing, a blank can be created by leaving the crucible without sample and confirming the position after the balance reading has stabilized. The software then treats that position as a blank sample.

Blank use and blank correction should be determined by the applicable analytical method and the laboratory’s quality-control procedure.

Yes, under the conditions described in the manual. If the test is interrupted unexpectedly, the operator should restore power, restart the instrument and open the control software. The Restore Furnace Test function can then be used to continue the interrupted experiment.

Starting a new weighing sequence instead of selecting the recovery function will prevent the interrupted test from being restored.

The software provides sample-number management, automatic numbering, user accounts, permission control, result searching, parallel-sample comparison, process-curve display, report configuration, printing and database backup.
