SDFCl4200 Automatic Fluorine and Chlorine Analyzer

The SDFCl4200 Automatic Fluorine and Chlorine Analyzer is a fully automated analytical system designed for the determination of total fluorine and total chlorine in coal, biomass, metal powders, soil, cement and other solid materials. It is suitable for laboratories in the coal, power generation, metallurgy, petrochemical, geological exploration, environmental monitoring, research and education sectors.

The instrument uses high-temperature combustion hydrolysis to convert fluorine and chlorine in the sample into volatile compounds, which are subsequently condensed and quantitatively absorbed in purified water. Fluorine is determined using a fluoride ion-selective electrode, while chlorine is measured by automatic potentiometric titration with standard silver nitrate solution.

Equipped with a 16-position autosampler, automatic sample loading and unloading, automated solution collection, reagent addition, pH adjustment, liquid transfer, analysis and result calculation, the SDFCl4200 supports continuous unattended operation and significantly reduces routine laboratory workload.

Key Features

Fully Automated, Unattended Operation

The 16-position autosampler automatically handles sample loading and unloading. Sample introduction, combustion hydrolysis, solution collection, analysis, result calculation and data storage are completed automatically, supporting continuous and overnight operation.

Fluorine and Chlorine in One Test

A single combustion-hydrolysis process can generate both fluorine and chlorine results. The collected solution is automatically divided between the two analysis modules, reducing repeated preparation and improving overall testing efficiency.

Higher Throughput with Dual Collection Bottles

The dual-bottle design allows sample combustion and solution analysis to proceed in parallel. This overlapping workflow shortens the continuous testing cycle to approximately 32–35 minutes per sample and improves throughput by about 28%.

Flexible Testing Modes

The system supports both split-aliquot mode for simultaneous fluorine and chlorine determination and full-transfer mode for single-element analysis. The latter uses the entire collected solution to improve sensitivity and reliability for low-level samples.

Reliable High-Temperature Hydrolysis

Samples are progressively decomposed under controlled oxygen and steam conditions at temperatures up to 1100°C. Stable gas-flow control promotes complete hydrolysis and helps minimise fluorine and chlorine losses.

Automatic Analysis and pH Adjustment

Fluorine is measured using a fluoride ion-selective electrode, while chlorine is determined by automatic potentiometric titration. The colour-recognition system automatically adjusts solution pH, reducing manual intervention and operating errors.

Precise Liquid Handling

Automatic volumetric control, solution splitting, reagent addition and liquid transfer improve repeatability while reducing contamination and volumetric errors.

Intelligent Method and Data Management

The software stores multiple methods for different sample types and supports one-click method selection. It also provides automatic calculation, calibration management, data storage, report printing, user permissions, operation logs and consumable tracking.

Built-In Safety and Diagnostic Functions

The system includes alarms and protection for overtemperature, thermocouple faults, liquid-transfer timeout, positioning errors and communication failures, improving reliability during unattended operation.

FAQs

The analyzer uses high-temperature combustion hydrolysis. Fluorine and chlorine compounds are converted into volatile species in a controlled oxygen–steam atmosphere, then condensed and quantitatively absorbed in purified water for subsequent analysis.

The instrument is designed for coal, biomass, metal powders, soil, cement and other solid materials suitable for high-temperature hydrolysis. Different test methods and operating parameters can be stored for different sample matrices.

Yes. The software includes calculation and correction functions for aqueous samples. The original solution volume, aliquot volume and dilution parameters must be entered correctly, and appropriate aqueous reference solutions should be used for calibration or verification.

Fluorine is converted into volatile fluorine compounds, primarily HF and SiF₄, during combustion hydrolysis. After absorption, fluoride concentration is measured using a fluoride ion-selective electrode by either the standard-addition method or the calibration-curve method.

Chlorine released during hydrolysis is absorbed in purified water and converted into chloride ions. The chloride is then determined automatically by potentiometric titration with standard silver nitrate solution, using a silver indicator electrode and a reference electrode.

Yes. In split-aliquot mode, the collected absorption solution is automatically divided between the fluorine and chlorine analysis modules. This allows both elements to be determined from a single combustion-hydrolysis process.

In split-aliquot mode, portions of the absorption solution are used separately for fluorine and chlorine determination. In full-transfer mode, the entire solution is transferred to one analysis module for single-element determination, which can improve sensitivity for low-level samples.

The sample is progressively decomposed at approximately 300°C, 600°C, 900°C and 1100°C. Staged introduction controls the release of volatile components, reduces rapid combustion and promotes complete conversion of fluorine and chlorine into absorbable compounds.

Samples should generally be ground to a particle size of ≤0.2 mm. For fluorine or simultaneous fluorine–chlorine testing, the sample is mixed with quartz sand and covered with an additional layer of quartz sand before being placed in the combustion boat.

Quartz sand helps distribute the sample uniformly, controls the combustion rate and supports the conversion of fluorine into volatile compounds during hydrolysis. Low-fluorine and low-chlorine quartz sand must be used to avoid elevated blanks and biased results.

The sample mass should be reduced when concentrations exceed the normal analytical range. Excessive fluorine or chlorine loading may produce biased results and accelerate corrosion or damage of the quartz combustion tube.

The initial single-sample cycle is approximately 59 minutes, including the complete operating sequence. During continuous testing, the dual-collection-bottle design allows overlapping combustion and analysis, reducing the cycle to approximately 32–35 minutes per sample.

While the solution from one sample is being analyzed, the hydrolysis products from the following sample can be collected in the second bottle. This overlapping workflow eliminates much of the waiting time associated with sequential collection and analysis.

The instrument supports both manual and automatic calibration. Calibration solutions should be measured from low to high concentration, and the electrode, solution temperature, ionic strength and stirring conditions should remain consistent throughout calibration and sample measurement.

The manual specifies that the fluoride-electrode slope should generally be greater than 55, with a calibration correlation coefficient above 0.9900. The temperature difference among calibration points should not exceed approximately 1°C.

For the calibration-curve method, daily calibration is recommended. For the standard-addition method, the stored slope and calibration relationship may be used for up to seven days when laboratory temperature remains stable; recalibration is required after significant temperature changes.

A colour-recognition module monitors the indicator colour and controls automatic reagent addition until the required pH condition is reached. This reduces manual adjustment errors and avoids interference that may affect the chlorine titration.

Operators should regularly inspect the quartz combustion tube, quartz wool, collection-bottle filters, liquid-transfer tubing, electrodes and reagent lines. Quartz wool should be replaced when darkened, degraded or contaminated, while filters and tubing should be cleaned or replaced when liquid transfer becomes slow or unstable.

The operator should first check the blank values, reagent condition, electrode calibration, oxygen and steam stability, system leak-tightness, quartz-tube condition, collection volume and aliquot-transfer accuracy. Contaminated filters, bubbles in reagent lines, incorrect volumetric settings or inconsistent solution temperatures can all produce poor accuracy or precision.
