SDCXS100 Calorific Value and Halogen Analyzer

The SDCXS100 Calorific Value and Halogen Analyzer is an integrated analytical system designed for the determination of calorific value, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and sulfur in solid and liquid combustible materials. It combines automatic bomb calorimetry, closed-system oxygen bomb combustion and ion chromatography in a fully automated workflow. The system is suitable for solid waste, hazardous waste, coal, coke, petroleum products, cement black meal and biomass fuels. From oxygen filling and combustion to bomb washing, absorption-solution preparation, dilution, storage and ion chromatographic analysis, the entire process is automated to improve laboratory efficiency, result consistency and operational safety.

PFAS Application

The SDCXS100 can support preliminary PFAS screening by determining total fluorine in combustible solid and liquid samples through oxygen bomb combustion followed by ion chromatography. Elevated fluorine results can be used to identify samples that may require further targeted PFAS investigation. As the system measures total fluorine rather than individual PFAS compounds, positive screening results should be confirmed using compound-specific techniques such as LC–MS/MS.

Key Features

Integrated Calorific Value and Halogen Analysis

The SDCXS100 integrates calorific value measurement with fluorine, chlorine, bromine and sulfur determination in a single system. Automated docking between the calorimeter and halogen-sulfur analysis module streamlines the complete analytical workflow and reduces manual sample handling.

Fully Automated Oxygen Bomb Operation

The system automatically performs oxygen filling and discharging, pressure detection, combustion-water volume determination, water-temperature adjustment and oxygen bomb washing. This minimizes operator intervention and improves testing consistency.

Automated Ion Chromatography Workflow

After combustion, the system automatically absorbs soluble combustion products and completes absorbing-solution collection, constant-volume preparation, storage, dilution and ion chromatographic analysis. Ion chromatography provides effective separation of different ionic species, reducing mutual interference while delivering low detection limits and reliable repeatability.

Rapid Analysis with High Throughput

Calorific value analysis is completed in less than 7.5 minutes, while the complete halogen and sulfur workflow takes less than 35 minutes, including washing, constant-volume preparation, dilution, storage and analysis. A 30-position autosampler automatically stores collected solutions, allowing calorific value testing to continue without being limited by the ion chromatography analysis cycle.

Stable and Precise Temperature Control

Automatic bucket-water temperature adjustment maintains closely controlled test conditions for each sample. Dual thermoelectric cooling and heating provides precise jacket-temperature control, improving environmental adaptability, long-term stability and measurement consistency. The specified calorific value RSD is ≤0.10%, with heat-capacity stability of ≤0.20% over three months.

Halogen-Resistant Oxygen Bomb

The specially designed halogen-resistant oxygen bomb improves resistance to corrosive combustion products generated by samples with high halogen concentrations. It is particularly suitable for demanding applications involving solid waste, hazardous waste and other complex combustible materials.

Adaptable to Difficult Samples

Dedicated solutions are available for samples with high volatility, high calorific value or high metal-salt content. Customized combustion bags with stable calorific characteristics facilitate the analysis of volatile or low-calorific-value samples while helping protect oxygen bombs, crucibles and related accessories.

Simplified Operation and Maintenance

The all-in-one calorimeter incorporates a large touchscreen and requires no external cooling-water tank. Self-diagnostic functions, a clearly structured system layout and a dedicated oxygen-bomb opening tool simplify routine operation and maintenance.

Flexible Data Management

The system uses an open database architecture and can be connected to a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for automatic collection, transfer and management of analytical data.

FAQs

The SDCXS100 integrates the SDCE3000 calorific value module with the SDXS01 halogen analysis module. It determines the calorific value of combustible samples and analyzes fluorine, chlorine, bromine and sulfur in the combustion absorption solution by ion chromatography.

The sample is first combusted in an oxygen bomb. The calorific value module measures the temperature rise to calculate the sample’s calorific value. The resulting soluble combustion products are automatically transferred to the halogen module, where the absorption solution is collected, brought to volume, diluted, stored and analyzed by ion chromatography.

The integrated system is suitable for combustible solid and liquid samples, including coal, coke, petroleum products, biomass fuels, solid waste, hazardous waste, cement black meal and rubber-related materials. The halogen module can also analyze prepared aqueous samples independently.

The calorific value module operates as an isoperibol oxygen bomb calorimeter. The outer vessel is maintained at a controlled temperature, while the temperature rise of the inner vessel is measured. Heat exchange between the inner and outer vessels is corrected mathematically to calculate the sample’s calorific value.

Ion chromatography separates the ionic species formed during oxygen bomb combustion before conductivity detection. This enables qualitative and quantitative determination of the target ions while reducing interference between different components in the absorption solution.

A sample mass of approximately 1.0 ±0.1 g is recommended for routine testing. According to the operating instructions, the total mass of the sample and any combustion aid should generally be between 0.7 and 1.4 g. The actual mass may need adjustment according to the sample’s calorific value and combustion characteristics.

The oxygen purity must be at least 99.5%, with 99.99% oxygen recommended. The regulator outlet pressure should normally be set to 2.8–3.0 MPa, and the cylinder pressure should not be below 4 MPa. Electrolytically generated oxygen must not be used, and oxygen bomb pressure should not exceed 3.2 MPa.

The calorific value module automatically performs oxygen filling and discharging, filling-pressure monitoring, inner-vessel water-volume determination, water-temperature adjustment, ignition, temperature measurement, result calculation, water drainage and oxygen bomb washing.

After combustion, the solution-processing module automatically collects the absorption solution, adds purified water, determines the required volume, transfers the solution, performs dilution when required, stores the prepared solution in the selected sample position and sends it for chromatographic analysis.

The autosampler provides up to 30 sample positions. Each sample position can store at least 50 mL of solution. Sample positions can be selected individually, and samples may be inserted manually when required.

Yes. The system uses a high-precision magnetic pump to perform automatic dilution. The normal specified dilution range is 10–100 times, while the software parameter allows the dilution factor to be configured over a broader 1–100 range according to the analytical method.

The calorific value software provides three solution-handling modes:

  • Analyze and store the collected solution
  • Store the collected solution only
  • Do not store or analyze the collected solution

When “analyze and store” is selected, the sample information is transferred to the halogen software and ion chromatographic analysis begins automatically after solution preparation.

Yes. The SDXS01 can be used as an independent ion chromatography system for prepared aqueous samples. The operator enters the sample ID, sample mass, autosampler position, dilution factor, acquisition time and final solution volume before starting the analysis.

Two calibration approaches are supported. The instrument can automatically prepare multiple calibration levels from a higher-concentration stock solution, or the operator can prepare each calibration level manually. The software supports linear or quadratic fitting, forced-zero fitting, segmented calibration ranges and calibration-curve backup and retrieval.

The sampling needle, injection valve, collection bottle, transfer bottle and associated flow paths can be automatically rinsed. Programmable rinsing cycles help minimize residual contamination, particularly when high- and low-concentration samples are analyzed in sequence.

Yes. When sample moisture is entered, the software can calculate both air-dried-basis and dry-basis elemental contents. Results can be displayed in ppm, mg/kg, µg/g or percent, with a configurable number of decimal places.

Heat capacity is calibrated using a certified reference material, normally benzoic acid. The manual specifies five consecutive calibration tests. When the relative standard deviation of the five heat-capacity results is below 0.2%, the software calculates the average and saves it for subsequent calorific value calculations.

The operator should check whether sufficient oxygen was filled, whether the oxygen bomb is leaking, whether the ignition wire and cotton thread were installed correctly, and whether the cotton thread was in contact with the sample. Difficult-to-ignite or low-calorific-value samples may require an appropriate combustion aid.

The oxygen bomb components should be rinsed with distilled water and dried after each test. The oxygen bomb lid should not be left inside the bomb after daily operation. Sealing rings should be replaced when leakage is detected. The bomb must undergo a safety inspection annually, after approximately 3,000 combustion cycles, or after repair or replacement of pressure-retaining components.

The software supports result searching, recalculation, configurable data columns, report printing, report-template editing, database backup and restoration, calibration-curve management and Excel export. Calorific value data can also be uploaded to a connected LIMS, while the halogen software records chromatograms, peak areas, retention times, solution concentrations and calculated elemental results.
